The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is showcasing a range of initiatives aimed at preventing the spread of invasive species during June, recognized as the state’s Invasive Species Action Month. Since 2009, DNR has promulgated invasive species rules to help residents identify and minimize the spread of non-native plants, animals, and diseases that can cause significant damage. A current rule classifies certain invasive species using science-based criteria, and bans transport, possession, transfer, and introduction, with limited exceptions.
This month, DNR will hold guided hikes, educational workshops, and invasive species workdays in natural areas across the state, where volunteers can help join the fight against invasive species. DNR also compiled a list of tips to prevent the arrival and spread of invasive species while hiking, camping, fishing, boating, and gardening. Residents can inform DNR of sightings through an online reporting system.
